You will have seen much written about this subject. Jenny Morris, our Groups Co-ordinator and a public health specialist wrote this for our guidance:
Dear U3A member
As you will know the number of people infected by the Coronavirus is increasing, though fortunately only a small number of people are suffering from it in the UK at the moment.
Clearly, we would all like that to remain the case.
You may be up to speed with the recommended public health precautions but I have found that many people I have spoken to are not really thinking about what they can do to protect themselves and their families and reduce the risk of the infection spreading
So, because I have worked in the public health area for many years I thought I would circulate the list of simple things we can do to keep ourselves safe, not least because as we get older infections hit us harder.
NHS advice is that we all should
- cover our mouth and nose with a tissue or use a sleeve (not your hands) when we cough or sneeze
- put used tissues in the bin immediately
- wash our hands with soap and water often – use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
- try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
and we should not
- touch our eyes, nose or mouth if our hands are not clean
I carry a hand sanitiser and try to remember to use it before eating, when I am out, as well as after coughing or sneezing
I have also stopped shaking hands, as that is a good way to transfer viral infections. I have explained to friends why I am doing so, and it’s certainly sparked a few interesting discussions.
The main symptoms of coronavirus are
- a cough
- a high temperature
- shortness of breath
If you have visited any of the areas where multiple cases have been reported in the last 14 days and are suffering from these symptoms the first thing to do is phone 111 for further advice.

We hope to see you happy and healthy at our regular meetings
