Bird Watching

Our Bird Watching group has a programme of activity for the whole year, with an event each month (occasionally two!). We are made up of people who enjoy seeing and identifying birds in the wild. There is a wide range of knowledge within the group, from beginners to more experienced. The good thing is that the more experienced are happy to pass on knowledge.

Most of our visits are to outdoor locations within East Anglia; a variety of distances from Ely. Members attending need to be prepared for some walking over a variety of surfaces, that can be uneven, wet or slippery. Suitable clothing is needed for the weather, in the summer it can be hot and sunny, in the winter cold and wet. Some of the locations we visit are suitable for those with mobility issues and some have mobility aids such as scooters etc for hire. A pair of binoculars is a must, to get the most out of the trips. Occasionally we have an indoor meeting or social event too.

Our programme aims to pick the best time to visit a location to enable the group to find a wide variety of species during the year. In 2023 we recorded 171 different bird species. Each year we vary the programme to include new places or popular locations in different seasons. Although our activities are primarily focussed on birds, we also take time to enjoy other wildlife experienced on our trips.

Every year we endeavour to arrange a trip to an area further away where a day trip is not feasible and which offers us something different in terms of bird species or habitats. This will involve staying in a hotel or similar for a few nights.

A monthly newsletter keeps members informed of our activities coming up and reports on recent trips. Members can send in items or photographs relating to birds that they have seen. Our WhatsApp Group allows news of any rare or interesting bird seen locally to be shared between members.

Membership of the group stands at about 50 and there are 10 to 25 members on a visit.
