ELMBRIDGE U3A - Bernard Lardner

It is with great regret that we report the death in November 2019 of our Speaker Secretary, Bernard Lardner.

Bernard joined Elmbridge U3A in 2014 and took over the job of Speaker Secretary in 2018, after responding to an urgent appeal from the Committee for more members to help with the running of our organisation. Bernard was a very able and efficient speaker secretary and quickly established a programme of varied and interesting talks for our monthly meetings at Claygate Village Hall. He was exceptionally good at anticipating speakers’ needs, making them welcome and looking after them on the day. He was also an active member of our management committee, making many insightful comments and suggestions that helped to take the business forward.

Bernard was modest and unassuming in his manner, and it was only gradually that one learned of his many achievements in life. He had worked in Finance, run his own companies and travelled widely in the Middle and Far East. He had in fact planned to deliver some talks about his experiences at future meetings, including one on Ethiopia and the Queen of Sheba. He was also very well known in the Philatelic world, winning international awards and attending expert conferences around the world.

Although suffering from a debilitating illness for some time, Bernard kept up his valuable work for Elmbridge U3A, attending our meetings and gatherings until very recently. He was a pleasure to work with, and will be sorely missed by his many friends and colleagues in Elmbridge U3A.
