The Leader says:
"I lead the “Italian Improvers” group. My group of five meet every two weeks on a Thursday for an hour and a half at my home in Walton.
When in 2014 my dear husband of fifty five years passed away my world collapsed. A good friend urged me to contact the U3A. I spoke to the Groups Coordinator who was very helpful and welcoming both to the club and to her German class. Hearing that I had lived in Rome, she talked me into leading an Italian group, giving me the self confidence to do something I never thought I would or could ever do. On March 5th 2015 I gave my first lesson. The U3A has not only helped me improve my German but has given me immense pride, joy and satisfaction in ‘facilitating’ a great group become better acquainted with Italian.
Here are the thoughts of some of my group on how they have benefitted from the U3A.
“U3A has given me the opportunity to learn the basics of another language without any costly fees in a small group setting. This has proved both productive and enjoyable .I find that I am now gaining an ability to read, understand and speak the language-an ability due to no small part to the easy relaxed atmosphere in which the class is held”.
“3years ago I joined the U3A group Italian for Beginners the only phrase I knew in Italian was ‘ O sole mio’. At present we all can understand and communicate the language and enjoy our sessions held in a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere at the Leader's place”.
”Learning a new language with the U3A has been a social and educational experience. Working in a small group means that our Leader can tailor lesson content and homework to our needs. I am now able to read and understand Italian text. It is interesting and important to learn new skills in retirement. The U3A has opened up my world after work”
Gillian(Winterbottom)”As we get older we should all be doing things that challenge us mentally and learning a new language is said to be one of the best things one can do. I am just so pleased and honoured to be a member of Barbara’s Italian class. Long may it continue”. Moving well out of my comfort zone especially at my age has been a truly gratifying experience.
Ciao e buon anno a tutti!
