Welcome to Edinburgh U3A
The University of the Third Age
Edinburgh U3A (EU3A) is a Scottish registered charity (SC020301) forming part of an International U3A movement founded in Europe in 1972. Edinburgh U3A is affiliated with the Third Age Trust.
The term "University" refers to its original meaning: "a collection of like minded people committed to learning for its own sake". In U3A there are no examinations or qualifications needed, and none are awarded. Rather we are a learning co-operative to enable members to share knowledge and learning. Our unique aim is that our members co-operate and collaborate in our third age to continue to learn and develop, and to have fun, as we also have a range of leisure activities. We are guided by U3A Principles.
Membership of a U3A is open to all who are in their “third age”. This is defined not by a particular age but by a period in life when full time employment has ceased and parenting responsibilities have diminished. There is no lower age limit for membership and people who are working part time may join.
Further details about the U3A movement and the U3A in the UK can be found on the Third Age Trust website.
Groups & Other Learning
In EU3A we have almost 200 activity groups ranging from Adventurous Cookery to Yoga through Art, Craft, Languages, Science and Walking groups. In addition there is a Lunch Club which tries out different restaurants each month and a Visits Group which provides transport to places of interest. We also have a Computer and IT Users Support Group whose members lend a hand with problems. See the full range on the Groups page with additional information for members in the Groups Booklet which is updated monthly. In addition to our own activities the Learning page has links to other U3As and a host of other external learning opportunities including distance learning possibilities.
Members are kept up to date with new groups and other information through the monthly Bulletin and twice a year EU3A publishes the Clarion magazine. See Publications for further information and other publications.
Group leaders and members who help with the various administrative and operational aspects of U3A procedures will find information and forms on the Resources page. Here can also be found the AGM details and the Annual Accounts and Report.
Your Invitation to Join Us
To participate in the activities of any of our groups you first have to join Edinburgh U3A. The annual subscription is £12 per year for individuals or £17 for two people sharing the same address, due at the beginning of each session in September. We do hope you will join us and play your part in our activities. New members are made very welcome. If you are interested in becoming a member, have a look at the Membership and How to Join Edinburgh U3A pages.
We have an Open Meeting once a month to which all members are invited as well as anyone in their “third age” who is interested in finding out more about EU3A. There is a short and, hopefully, interesting talk on a variety of subjects. Announcements of future events and any new groups are made. After the meeting members can engage in relaxed discussion, exchange ideas in a friendly atmosphere over refreshments, and sign up for activities and new groups. See the Events page for dates and full list of future talks.
The Committee welcomes feedback from members and prospective members. Full list of current committee members and email addresses can be found on the Contact the Committee page.
