The name Anglia Network was given to the Group to show the flexibility that we allow to include any U3A within striking distance to join us, rather than restricting ourselves to one county. Over the years we have had member U3As from Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire and Suffolk. As new Networks have formed in those areas, some of our U3As have sensibly moved to join a nearer Network. However, we still have 9 member U3As - Huntingdon, St Neots, St Ives, March, Ramsey, Chatteris, Ely & District, Wisbech and Downham Market.
The Network has three general meetings a year, in February, June and October. At one of the meetings we invite a guest speaker to cover an important topic, such as: Publications (Francis Beckett), Resources ( speaker from the National Resources Centre) and Shared Learning Projects (Advisor Jennifer Simpson).
At another meeting we have a workshop at which we tackle a specific chosen area, such a s Communication, Committee members Roles and Responsibilities, Finance. The third meeting tends to be more of an Open Forum at which member U3As raise issues that they want to discuss, get advice on or explore as a new move.
On top of these three meetings, we now also run an annual Study Day on a specific Interest Group topic. For example, our first Study Day 3 years ago was a general Groups Fair, but the second one 2 years ago was on Creative Writing with guests speakers, a Poet/Author and an advisor from a self-publishing company. Last year, the Study Day was on Family History, with 2 expert guest speakers as well as displays from local Family History Associations and displays by our member U3A's Family History Groups.
These events have proved to be both interesting and very useful. Attendee numbers are going up and we welcome U3A members from U3As outside our Network, provided we have space at the venue.
