HOT NEWS Zoom discussion on Monday 19th July
Set up by the London group of u3a Climate Change Network. We are now a member of the Climate Change Network. To find out more go to Climate Change Network and then look for events
We have now got this group going. At the present time we are still meeting once monthly by Zoom on a Thursday at 14:00
(We are meeting by Zoom initially, but as soon as we are allowed to meet up face to face we will move to a hired venue.)
Once we are back meeting live, we may also have some meetings by Zoom, to show that we are serious about reducing our carbon footprint.
The future programme
All or any ideas are welcomed. We’ll probably have some revision by looking at one or two old presentations for the Science and Technology group, but beyond that it is going to be up to YOU the members to decide what we should discuss or evaluate, or where we should go for a visit.
Keep your eyes on the website and emails to get the updates.
If you had looked earlier you would have seen a brainstormed list of ideas. I decided to extend it and to sort it alphabetically. The resulting list is currently 191 ideas long!! So it isn't on this page any more - but you can download it as a pdf document here Brainstormed ideas
Another list - this time of things that are difficult to recycle - or are recyclable but not economic to recycle. Got to ==> Difficult or not economic to recycle
At our first meeting there was a lot of emphasis on (and distrust of) plastics. So we need to look closely into plastics use and recycling. I have found an interesting link on the pros and cons of plastics and their recycling or "repurposing" - from the British Plastics Federation. Go to this link ==> BPF on plastics recycling
The much hated non-recylable toothpaste tube. Good news! Colgate Palmolive are finally leading the pack here
Read about it with this link ==> Recycling toothpaste tubes
Is polyester costing the Earth? Fabric production is responsible for 10% of global carbon dioxide. Polyester fabric production is on track to produce a quarter of that 10%! Go to ==> Recyclable polyester rPET to find out
Can we achieve Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050?? Glyn Merrett has found a vey interesting report issued by the International Energy Agency Look at this IEA report! Net Zero by 2050 If you find it too heavy going just try reading the Management Summary
Here is a link to the presentation I gave on 22nd July - Global Warming update 220721. It is a pdf file so you can easily flick through it ==> Global Warming update 220721
I hope you will come and join us. Remember - this is YOUR group - the ideas can and should be put forward by any member at all. I would love to have some help with the admin as well please. Don't be shy!
