You must be a Member of Ealing u3a to take part in an Interest Group
Antiques Group
For the Group meetings, members are asked to bring a small antique and either tell us about it or find out, with members help, if they don’t know. Mike will also continue to reveal the secrets of the antique trade.
The group now meets at the New Inn, South Ealing Rd. opposite St Mary’s church at 2:00pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. Parking in the area usually has to be paid but it is on 65 bus route.
We welcome anyone interested in antiques to join our discussions and invite members to bring a antique, or a photograph of one, and tell us all about it.
The inaugural meeting of this group was in January 2022, at which Mike introduced a small antique object, a 19th century child’s pottery mug with a blue transfer of two children holding a banner; written on was “wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging.” It was an insignificant antique, yet from it we can think of its manufacture and purpose and place in history. The condition was excellent, yet there were no manufacturers marks on it. It was in fact from a South Wales pottery and given out at a non conformance chapel. So, this lead us to the problems with alcohol at this time and the non-conformance movement with the spread of Chapel building in England and Wales. It also lead to pub closures on Sundays in Wales.
