A few valiant souls turned up at Dock Park on this extremely dreich early March morning to honour and applaud a tree planting. The tree chosen “Fagus Sylvatica,” an “Upright Purple Beech” to you and me, was sponsored by U3A Dumfries to celebrate the 25th anniversary of our own particular branch of the University of the Third Age here in Dumfries.
We were privileged to have Mr Alan Anderson, one of our founder members, come along to observe and officiate. The U3A Dumfries was successfully launched in September 1993 and by November of the same year it had 60 members from as far afield as Annan, Lockerbie, Moffat and Creetown, attending a variety of groups including Walking groups, Patchwork & Quilting, German, French, Calligraphy, Bridge for Beginners and Mah-jong to name but a few.
The Initial Steering Committee consisted of:
Alan Anderson, Betty Tindal and Donald McLeod.
And a Steering Group was made up of:
Bill and Bunty Taylor, Peter and Frances Grant, Gerry Dolan, John Brooker, Roy Carlaw and Kenneth Kennedy.
Their aim then was to provide a stimulating, active and supportive retirement for all its members, we hope we have followed faithfully along the path laid out for us on that September day in 1993.
