This year we are studying in some depth the ‘Young British Artists’ of their day who met at the Slade
School of Art at the beginning of the 20 th century. Dora Carrington, Stanley Spenser, Paul Nash are
among many familiar and some less familiar names. They came from diverse backgrounds,
challenged established conventions and found new ways of expressing themselves. All left their
mark on the British art scene for decades to come. These were turbulent, challenging and innovative
times involving all aspects of society and culminating in the First WW with its consequences. In due
course we hope to look at ‘avant garde’ artists in other European countries who also experienced
considerable upheaval. In our group there is plenty of discussion together with small presentations
by members as planned by the group. There may also be occasional visits to art galleries.
