Friday 2 July at 2pm on Zoom: The Brixton Bard. Alex Wheatle, born in Brixton to Jamaican parents, became the award-winning author of more than a dozen children’s and young adult books, including Brixton Rock and The Dirty South. In 2008 he was awarded an MBE for services to literature, although he was invited he points out, to only one literary festival. Spending much of his childhood in the notorious Shirley Oaks children’s home, Alex was later imprisoned for participation in the Brixton riots. In 2020 his experiences were dramatised as the fourth film in Steve McQeen’s acclaimed Small Axe series. Non-members welcome - To book a free place through Eventbrite click here.
