For information about the operation of Droitwich U3A groups during the current pandemic, please see the table of Currently Active Groups at the start of the Groups page.
We each bring along a topical issue that we discuss as a group, thereby covering a wide range of topics from "does the UK have enough midwives" through to "implications of driverless cars". We do sometimes pick a topic in advance to allow thinking time before a meeting especially if the content is quite wide, eg Brexit.
The Group Leader chairs the meeting allowing all to have a say and limits the discussion if nothing new is being contributed. This can mean that we don’t get around to each member's subject but we just hold it over for the following meeting. There have been occasions when opinions are forcefully expressed but we do have a great deal of respect for each other and the chairman will step in to tone the meeting down but this is very rarely necessary.
Different opinions are most welcome and lead to perhaps the most interesting discussions and sometimes we have a before and after vote just to see if the discussion has changed opinion. If a topic might prove contentious we would normally ask if all present are happy to discuss and if anyone says they are uncomfortable with it then we move on to the next subject. This has only happened once. We have also banned subjects such as Covid as being too depressing and heavily covered in daily news programmes.
Overall, we find a lot to discuss, are welcoming of different points of view, reasonably well behaved, and occasionally change our minds.
Although we normally meet in different member's homes, there is no obligation on any member to host a meeting.
