We are about to celebrate our 2nd Anniversary of starting this friendly little group, which meets on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 2-00p.m. for about 2 hours at 9 Lavender Drive, Downham Market. At the moment we have nine members, and as we meet in a house, we really only have space for another 3 people, who would be most welcome, to make up 3 tables of 4 players on each.
On a good day we can play up to about 6 separate games in the time, and these can all be quite different in outcome. The actual style of game itself is similar to the card game Rummy, where prials of the same number and runs of the same suit are collected, but using tiles instead of cards. The winner finishes with the required number and types of these sets as required in that particular game and calls “Mah-Jong”. This perhaps sounds complicated, but in fact is quite straightforward, and we all help each other if anyone forgets what to do! We also have an instruction book with very clear diagrams and helpful text.
Each combination of qualifying tile collections has been allocated a name to define them, some of which sound rather bizarre and amusing, such as Red Lantern, Dragon Fly, Gertie’s Garter, Windy Chows, Wriggly Snake, Knitting, and Heavenly Paradise, to name but a few of the 30-odd available to choose. As well as the 3 basic suits we also can collect dragons, winds, flowers and seasons, with occasionally even wild tiles. Sounds fascinating, doesn’t it?
We do manage to fit in refreshments at some stage of the afternoon, but are inclined to let our drinks grow cold as we are so busy enjoying ourselves…
If you would like to join in and see why it gives us all so much pleasure, contact Marian Stamp for more details.
