Gardening
INTRODUCTION
The Gardening Group was formed in December 2009 and members meet at least monthly through the year(except December). An annual programme of events/garden visits is drawn up in consultation with group members. This will include visits to members’ own gardens, plant nurseries, specialist growers and famous and less well-known gardens within striking distance of Downham. An opportunity for at least a cup of tea or coffee and a cake is de rigueur.
The events are usually scheduled for a Tuesday starting at 11-00am at the venue but this can be varied to fit with opening dates/times of particular venues. Destinations are usually fairly local to Downham but can be as far as 45 miles from Downham so lift sharing is encouraged . The groups activities were suspended through the Covid lockdown but got going again in 2022
The programme for 2023 will be completed in January and issued to members. It will be able to be viewed or downloaded from this webpage The programme will include some old favourites and new venues. In 2017 we organised a very successful all day coach trip to Lyveden New Bield and the famous gardens at Barnsdale created by the late Geoff Hamilton and in June 2018 there was a coach trip to the wonderful gardens at East Ruston Old Vicarage.
Members don’t need to be expert gardeners, just interested in gardens and gardening and enjoy visiting fine gardens in good friendly company. New members are always welcome as are suggestions for additions to the programme.
Leadership of the Gardening Group has been taken on by Julia Kietch and Ruth Mountain for 2023 and details of this year's programme will be revealed at the Groups annual lunch in January
