If you click on an individual group at the bottom of this page, it will show details of venue, date and time for the meetings plus a brief description. U3a members may join as many interest groups as they wish.
- HOW OUR GROUPS WORK
Interest groups set their own agendas and work at their own comfortable pace. Groups are fully democratic, non-sectarian and non-political. The key is enjoyment where learning is for its own sake and for that moment. Group Leaders take on responsibility for its operation. They may or may not have expertise in the subject. Sometimes there may be one Group Leader, sometimes the leadership may vary, pass from one member to another or be shared among a number of members.
Interest groups are the backbone of the u3a and we are all grateful to our current group leaders for the time and commitment they give to support DU3A. In all cases the aim is to promote learning and help members both to enjoy existing interests and develop new ones. Groups are formed from a number of like-minded members and are informal and friendly. Our Groups can cover both 'Study' topics and those which are more 'Leisure' orientated. Almost anything is possible with good will and enthusiasm. Most groups are of a self-help nature. Knowledge is pooled and shared and the social element is very important. Interest groups are self managed and self funded. Learning is for pleasure and no qualifications are required or given. The ethos of the u3a movement is 'by the members, for the members' so if you have an interest or skill you would be willing to share, please contact the Group Co-ordinator who will be happy to discuss it with you.
- JOINING A GROUP
If you are interested in joining a group, you should contact the Group Leader (see the CONTACTS list sent to Du3a members) or the Groups Co-ordinator (via the CONTACT page). If you need further help, please send us a message via the CONTACT page and we will put you in touch with the right person. You may also contact an individual group leader by clicking on the Blue Bird on a specific Group page. All members are asked to contact the Group Leader before attending a group for the first time.
After any initial 'taster' sessions, you need to become a paid-up member of the Doncaster u3a if you wish to take part in further group meetings or activities.
- FREQUENCY OF MEETINGS
All groups vary. Some are weekly, some fortnightly and some monthly. For more details, see the Group List and Summary Timetable below. It is also helpful to refer to the monthly Calendar.
- CONTENT OF MEETINGS
The content of meetings is determined by the group members. In some groups, members, other than the Group Leader, are encouraged to take over a meeting and prepare the material.
- FEES
Most of the groups are free, though some have a modest charge to cover the running expenses. This will usually be for venue hire and materials. There will be a charge for those wanting refreshments – in some instances it may be a condition of attendance to buy a drink because the venue is given free for our use on that understanding.
- VENUES
Meetings take place according to the needs of the group. The majority of the venues used for meetings are in central Doncaster for easy access.
- MOBILITY & ACCESSIBILITY
Mobility and accessibility for all Du3a groups and activities is being reviewed. At present some venues have limited accessibility.
- IDEAS FOR NEW GROUPS
Further ideas for new groups can be found in U3A Oversights - ideas for new groups on the U3A Site Builder website. See the LINK on the top right.
