Derwent Valley

Welcome to the Derwent Valley u3a

We are a local group of the national organisation of the U3A, which encourages retired/semi retired people to life long learning. To learn new knowledge and skills, to stay active and make the most out of life in an environment of friendship and fun.
We are a very friendly group that serves the Whickham and surrounding areas but we welcome anyone who would like to become a member. We just ask as a member you embrace the ethos of the u3a of “Learn, Live, Laugh”.

We meet on the 2nd Monday of the month at 10.00am at St. Mary’s Centre, Church Chare, Whickham. We have a great diversity of speakers at our meetings, where we socialise with a cuppa over some very interesting topics. Two months of the year August and December we have a coffee morning where we are entertained with a show performed by our own Derwent Valley Players group. In January our monthly meeting is replaced with a New Year lunch, which is held at one of the many local/ hotels in the area.

Our membership fee is £ 25.00 per year which allows members to attend monthly meetings and as many of the activity groups as they wish. We currently have 131 members and we are always looking for new members to join. There are 20 activity groups, all activities are organised by our members who donate their skills and expertise voluntarily.

If you wish to join Derwent Valley or find out about us please come along to one of our monthly meetings or contact our Membership secretary Sheila Hind, see details on contact page.

Note from Chairperson
COVID 19 continues to have a great impact on all our lives and unfortunately due to lockdown/ restrictions our monthly meetings remain suspended but rest assured we will restart as soon as we are given the safe go ahead. Some activity groups have managed to operate by following the guidance from head office. Please contact group leaders or the Group leader co-ordinator. Val Horsler (see details on contact page) to see what is still active.

As a complete novice to the U3A I became the Derwent Valley chairperson just before lockdown to keep the group operating. It has been difficult but with the help of your committee we have been exploring how to keep Derwent Valley alive. The committee continue to meet via Zoom meetings ( which has been a big learning curve for us all!)and we are currently updating our members details to see if we can start Zoom monthly meetings to deliver our monthly talks. We know that this is not the same as meeting up and socialising but it will keep us together until we can be together again. So until then take care and stay safe. If any of our members want to talk directly to any of the committee with any ideas or just to talk we are always hear to listen.
