JOLLY DAYS OUT (Mk 2)

Jolly Days Out started with the simple idea of organising a few trips each year for the Dereham U3a.

Jill and I had just joined the Dereham branch in July 2017 when Marion Morgan the “Chair” at that time announced that Joan Isbill, the outings organiser, was looking to” pass on the reins” to someone else.

We approached Marion and said we were willing to give it a try and see what happened. Joan was great, we were invited round to her bungalow one evening to find Marion there as well. Joan explained how she had organised the trips, the coach companies she used and answered the many questions we had.

Marion made it so easy. Basically it was “we will leave it all up to you, just keep us informed and the committee would help in any way they could.” Great, just what we had hoped to hear.

Joan arranged meetings for us with the coach companies and we prepared for “take off”.

As all the trips had to be self financing we were working in the dark for a few trips as we had no real idea of what destinations would be popular. We asked for suggestions from the members and soon had a list of 97 very varied options. Something else that quickly became apparent was that we would need to plan at least 3 months in advance and preferably more, in order that we could guarantee coaches on our preferred dates.

So much to consider. What would be a popular destination, how long should the journey be, what would be a reasonable time to leave. were there suitable stops for comfort breaks, have we a first aid trained person available, how would tickets be reserved or paid for without knowing the likely response to our advertised trips and many other considerations.

KYNREN SPECTACULAR We were really lucky. Dereham U3A members have filled every trip we have run and on a number of occasions we have run 2 coaches to the same venue on the same day. We couldn’t have done any of this without Derek and Ann’s invaluable help. Not only did they help us out on the coaches but it would have been an impossible task to take the payments at the monthly meetings without them.

Over the 2 years up until February 2020 when our last trip ran we had arranged 36 day trips and three 5 day holidays selling a total of over 2700 seats. Then came" lockdown". We had a further 12 trips already planned, booked and ready to go for 2020.

In June 2020, with Jill's major surgery coming out of the blue and everyone in" lockdown" we felt that it would be a good time for someone else to take over the running of “Jolly Days Out”. We knew we would miss the camaraderie and laughter we had on the trips but they had become so successful that the workload was making it almost a full time job.

Despite Advertising for new organisers for 8 months no one came forward. KIRSTEAD HALL

Throughout “lockdown” and with nowhere to go we started to look at other options and ways of organising the trips again in such a way that the organisers workload was reduced considerably. Also, to make it easier for someone else to take over in the future with a much simpler system in place.

We considered various options but finally after speaking to Eastons Holidays, a well established Norfolk company, they agreed to our proposal.

Jill and I would decide on venues from our list which now contained over 150 suggestions, we would also decide on dates and times and Eastons would supply the coach. The driver would be responsible for checking members onto the coach. Bookings would be made direct by telephone to Eastons with payment by credit or debit card. Seats would be reserved. Pick up at our normal spot the Cherry Tree car park. A massively reduced workload. Voila !!.

We are already planning our first trips. We just need Lockdown to end !!
