Book Group 2
The Adventurous Eight Go To Cheltenham
The Cheltenham Literature Festival beckoned and off we went for a few days - all eight members of our Book Group. The planning had taken some time, not least deciding which of the varied and interesting events we would each choose to attend and then the nerve racking morning when ticket sales opened !
In the end we were successful in most of our choices, with authors as diverse as Pam Ayres and Melvyn Bragg, and a range of subjects to satisfy all tastes and interests. There were moving sessions from the war zone cameraman Paul Conroy and the pianist from Yarmouk in Syria; stimulating interviews on modern life and politics such as the role of GCHQ, and fascinating insights into lives past and present including Pliny the Younger, Gerald Scarfe and Putin ! Between us, we attended a total of 21 events over the 4 days, guided by a trusty spreadsheet to show us where we should be next !
We gathered over dinner each evening to share our experiences, with a glass or two of wine to aid our lively discussion ! All in all , a thought provoking and thoroughly enjoyable visit and one we hope to repeat next year .

The aim of each meeting is to discuss a range of authors and books. An annual programme of topics, agreed by the group, covers anything from political biography to a book that made you laugh! Each member reads from their choice of book for the month’s topic and then reviews it with the group. There are occasional outings, eg to exhibitions and festivals.
