Music 1 (Group 1)
The Group Contact is Alastair MacFarlane.
The Letham Music Group meets every second Tuesday, alternating with the Ceres Music Group. The programmes focus largely on classical music. As the Letham Group is quite large, the sessions are split a.m. and p.m., 10-12 and 2-4; some people come in the morning, some in the afternoon, and the programme is the same both times.
We listen to music with a linked narrative, with an interval of about 20 minutes for tea and coffee. Recently we’ve had programmes on cello music, ballet, Andre Previn, Tchaikovsky Symphonies, one called ‘Happy Beethoven’, Du Falla, Memories of Summer (on January 8th.), one called ‘Adventures with Sibelius’ which featured Finnish myths and legends, Brahms’ 2nd. Piano Concerto, Benjamin Britten and Dvorak, and a rather special one called ‘Politicians’ Choice’ when 22 politicians, including Hilary Benn, Ken Clarke, Sir Vince Cable, Ruth Davidson, Stephen Gethins, Caroline Lucas, Dennis Skinner, Rory Stewart, Sir Keir Starmer and Jo Swinson, sent us favourite pieces to listen to – choices ranged from Mahler’s 8th. Symphony (we heard just a little bit) to ‘Stranger on the Shore’ (we heard all of it).
The two groups are very friendly and the sessions are informal. Absolutely no musical knowledge is expected or required ; if you like listening to music, you are welcome to come along. There are spaces for new members in both groups.
If you are interested in joining this group, then please send a message using the bluebird on this page. Your message will be logged and forwarded to the Group Contact for a response.
