Craft group are sew committed to charity project

Members of our Crewkerne & District U3A craft group are using their sewing skills to help a charity dedicated to eliminating malaria, a disease that kills a child every two minutes somewhere in the world. And for one of the group it is a cause that is very personal.

Each year the group choose a project to support, and this year they have decided to help the charity Malaria No More UK. Led by Rita Fisk, they are making a double quilt decorated with appliqued flowers. Once finished, it will be presented to the charity for them to use it to raise funds. Val Warren, who is a member, has a great niece who caught malaria while doing voluntary service work in India and who now works for the charity.

Tara Sherjan, the charity’s community fundraising manager, commented: “I’d like to thank them so much for choosing to support our charity. With the support of individuals and groups like Crewkerne & District U3A we can make a difference.”

The craft group have used their talents to support other charities and well deserving causes in the past, such as making a quilt for a local hospice and a wall hanging for the Methodist Church. At other times baby quilts were produced for a charity that provides them for seriously ill babies and children, and knitted beanies were made for the Mission to Seafarers.

They also made bonnets for an exhibition that went on a tour of Australia! Each bonnet was labelled with the name of a deported woman and placed in a Perspex box to depict the ship on which she was sent to Australia. And when the Queen visited Crewkerne as part of the Jubilee celebrations the group set about making banners – based on historic crowns – to decorate the streets of the town
