Message from the Chair

May I wish you all a safe, happy and healthy 2022.

The past year has been a series of ups and downs but it has been a pleasure to see our groups meeting since September. We were able to have our Annual General Meeting on 29th October, in person this year, and 50+ members joined us at the Cranleigh Arts Centre where we were made very welcome. The business meeting went well and we all thoroughly enjoyed Margaret Watson’s performance on her beautiful golden harp. She will be a hard act to follow for this years AGM!

It was nice to see so many Group Leaders able to join us in December and to be able to show our appreciation for all time and effort they put into making Cranleigh and District u3a the success it is. Sadly, quite a number of Group Leaders who have been in place for many years decided to stand down in 2021 but in almost cases others have taken up the baton to keep the groups running. It is a commitment and I am very grateful to both retiring and new Group Leaders for taking it on.

As we enter the New Year, we are still in uncertain times with Covid measures and I know that some groups took the decision to take a longer break over Christmas to see if any further regulations came into force. Fortunately, so far that has not been the case. I know it is not ideal to have to wear masks indoors and the increasingly cold weather makes having doors and windows open less appealing but if it helps keep us all safe and enables us to meet up with friends, I am sure that we will persevere with it.

I’m not a huge fan of the term ‘the new normal’ but if that describes being able to live our lives, meet our friends and socialise, on this occasion I will use it.

Very Best Wishes,

Veronica Barnard
