Cowbridge

Natural History

The group meets usually on the first Thursday of the month (February to December) in various locations.

Contact Teresa Jenkins.

The Group organises a mix of talks (usually in the winter months) and guided visits to local nature reserves and other places of interest learning about birds and butterflies, bugs and botany, not forgetting reptiles and amphibians.

Prospective members are most welcome. Please email if you would like to join the group so that you can be added to the circulation list. A reminder about each meeting is sent by email about 1 week beforehand. The annual subscription for 2020 is £5 per head to cover the costs of hiring a venue for meetings and small donations to the places we visit.

The programme is below. The events for 2020 are in the process of being organised by the members. In the interests of distribution of labour and variety, it is hoped that all members as individuals or pairs undertake to organise a meeting now and then.

Please check the site regularly in case there are last minute changes.

We are now in possession of a TRAIL CAMERA , courtesy of a grant from Cowbridge U3A. Paid up members are welcome to use the camera to monitor the wildlife on their property--hedgehogs, foxes, badgers, lynx etc.

A sub-group ----NATURAL HISTORY EXTRA -----is to be launched at the AGM , to enable interested members who are available at short notice to communicate with each other via email to do additional, extra-mural trips.
Many of the trips that members might like to go on do not lend themselves to a rigid calendar of events. So, as a trial in 2020, in addition to the set programme we hope to be able to do other things spontaneously. Anyone will be able to initiate an event at any time. We anticipate going to various birding sites during the Winter when the main group only has indoor meetings, to see the Winter migrants but being able to organise it when the weather is suitable. Like-wise for early morning starts to look for bitterns in Winter, or a dawn chorus walk in Spring, evening trips to detect bats, nightjars, wild boar or beavers. Recently there were sightings of unusual birds in Porthcawl---a snow bunting and a red-backed shrike. A rallying call to go and see them before these transient visitors disappear would be an ideal function for the NH Extra group.

Another addition is to be a WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPH COMPETITION. The winner will be voted by the members at the end of the year. The photographs would need to be taken in the current year by a member.( Year from one AGM to the next). Each individual could enter a maximum of three images, which will be anonymised. Providing there is a minimum of ten photographs in the competition, then a small prize will be awarded. Each image entered should be accompanied by a brief description of where and when it was taken, and a declaration of any modifications or enhancements made to it.

ALL MEETINGS SUSPENDED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE DUE TO CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC. 17/3/20

SEND IN YOUR WILDLIFE OBSERVATIONS INSTEAD---SEE SIGHTINGS LINK. Email me to give permission for me to include you in the NH Obs group, so that you are in the loop. (Your email address will be available to all in the group)
