Family History

Group Leader - Christine Stringer

Welcome to the Limebrook Family History Group web page. My name is Chris Stringer and I have been running the Family History Group since 2011 when Limebrook U3A started. We now have 16 members over 2 groups which are run on the same day of the month, one at 10am and the other at 2.30pm. Please see diary for dates. As the topic is the same for both groups, all members can come to either group so if you cannot make a morning session you can join us in the afternoon and visa versa, providing there is space.

There will be a notice board at each monthly meeting giving you details of when and where we meet. You will also find information in the monthly newsletter.

Meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday at my home in Bicknacre during winter (September to June) allowing time for outdoor activities during the summer months. Occasionally the date will change but all group members will be notified by email.

No prior knowledge of family history is required but you will need access to a computer as most records and/or indexes are now only available via the internet. I will gladly assist anyone who needs help with using a computer for genealogical purposes, if you need further help, you could join the computer group which is an excellent way of improving your computer skills.

Ancestry and FindMyPast are subscription websites but these can be accessed for free at any County Record Office* without booking or at your local library where you can book in advance by the hour. FamilySearch is free and a really good source of worldwide information and then there is The National Archives, Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, Scotlands People and the many local record offices throughout the British Isles.

The links on the right hand side of this page are topics that I have already covered but may revisit from time to time. I try to keep to topics that I have first hand knowledge of or something requested by one of the group members.

  • You will need a County Archives Research Network ticket which you can get at any record office, the CARN scheme is a nationally recognised system of reader's tickets for local authority record offices.
