Ems Valley

Local History

We meet, in the afternoon, on first Friday in month.

During the summer we are out and about visiting places of local interest and the winter programme, inside, with speakers covering topics of interest in our area.

Dates for your Diary
Fri May 3rd My thanks to Evonne for arranging this... Dr Caroline Bowden directed the Who were the Nuns? Project at Queen Mary University of London until 2013. The project team studied the membership of the English convents in exile creating a widely used database and website. Caroline has continued to expand her research and will talk about the convents and the families whose daughters left the local area (Portsmouth-Chichester-Harting) to join the exile convents and also consider evidence of other convents in the area in recent times. This will include EMSWORTH'S Convent
Fri Jun 7th I’ll run through the history of the cemeteries and take you round to see some of the interesting graves. If anyone in the group is looking for a particular grave I can do some research beforehand as I have access to the burial records

Regards
Penny Munday

Fri Aug 2nd Dear Reg
I have been in touch with my fellow volunteers and we suggest Friday 2nd August @ 2pm for the visit of approximately 25 adults. As I mentioned the normal entry fee (£4) will apply but donations are always welcome. We will run the wheel and pump subject to river conditions and breakdowns! I suggest you allow an hour for the tour but it can take longer to go through 240 years of history!
Please see the website for background information...
