Newsletter Dec 2021 | Happy Christmas to all! Since our last newsletter the weather has got a lot colder, the days are much shorter and there are Christmas decorations up and shops tempting us with delights: all a reminder that yet another year is coming to a close and we will be wishing each other a ‘Happy New Year’ before we know it! We hope that we will all have a better Christmas than last year and enjoy meeting up with relatives and friends. If you enjoy reading this newsletter don’t forget to get in touch. We are always grateful for any contribution you would like to be included. Gary Denyer & Angela Snowdon Photo by Margaret Bull Walk up the Domen Nine U3A members (four men and five women) took part in a 3.6 mile walk to the Domen, led by Alen. We set off from the bottom of Garden City climbing southwards. We were slightly disappointed at the low mist but there was thankfully no rain. The first 600 yards were steep but we stopped at a couple of viewing points to catch our breath and our first view was of Tyllwyn, Waunlwyd & Victoria. Various bird boxes were dotted around the trees as we trod on many-coloured leaves and saw interesting copper plated signs with descriptions of the surrounding habitat. We then passed relics of bygone ages of coal & steam and a derelict building which once contained a steam-powered engine which was used to haul slag from collieries in the area. A point of interest was the Ebbw Vale bricks scattered around which are no longer produced. After passing a minor landslide the path flattened out and we eventually reached the top of the ridge which was shrouded in mist. We gingerly passed a herd of long-horned cattle & eventually reached the summit of the Domen where there are remains of a lookout used in the Second World War for spotting enemy planes endeavouring to bomb the steelworks. Three of our group decided to disappear like ghosts in the mist when we stopped to eat our packed lunches at the top, so they do not appear in the photograph. We rapidly demolished our sarnies as the wind was threatening to blow them off the edge. We carefully negotiated two broken stiles and our descent was through woods leading back to Garden City. In spite of the mist and lack of distant views, everyone enjoyed the walk and thanked Alen for guiding us. Alen and Joan Sparrow Music Appreciation Group Our theme for the recent meeting was 'Night.' We started off with something to wake us up, Wilson Pickett singing 'In the Midnight Hour' which was on juke boxes in 1966. We listened to mainly well-known orchestral pieces and songs by Beethoven, Brahms, Chopin, Mozart and Schubert on themes of night and moonlight. Some were dreamy and peaceful, occasionally quite lively, with some interesting interpretations by conductors. They included the Moonlight Sonata, 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' (A Little Night Music), Nocturnes, and the musical version of Goethe's poem 'An den Mond' (To the Moon). Many of these recordings were old, on vinyl and great quality. It was a joy to be able to hear Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing. A Shorter Walk before Christmas Since it is now getting quite cold I think the walkers should avoid the tops of the mountains for a while. On our last - very misty and cold but enjoyable - walk people said they would like another short walk before Christmas. I haven't got time to investigate other walks at the moment, but could take you on a circular walk on the lower slopes of the mountain above Tyllwyn and Waunlwyd. It is not long, will not go higher than the Long Feeder Pond and is mostly level walking. It will take at least one and a quarter hours, how much longer will depend on how fast people walk. There is no need to bring sandwiches, but you might want a snack, and it's always wise to have drinking water with you. Warm windproof clothing is probably essential. We would meet at 10.30. To get to the meeting point go up the hill opposite the General Offices, don't turn left to the Cwm Draw Estate, but keep straight on till you come to what appears to be a dead end with a gas sub-station on the left. There is plenty of space to park on the right, but if you turn the corner to the left watch out for broken glass. I shall be walking up the very rough path from Tyllwyn so will not have my car there. Possible dates: Wed 1st, Thurs 2nd, Tues 7th, Wed 8th, Thurs 9th, Fri 10th. The most likely date is Wed 8th. Please let me know your availability and whether you would like to join us. Weather not guaranteed! If you are not currently a member of the Walking Group please get in touch with us if you would like to join us on this and/or future walks. Tarie Carlyon In addition, known only to the person who brought it, 'Mountains Dreaming' was a song about diving and swimming in a moonlit river pool surrounded by rainforest under a young moon in the mountains of southern India, sung by Indian members of the community founded by the writer of the poem, the tune composed by a doctor. As there are many more interesting pieces of music with a nocturnal connection the theme for the next meeting will be 'Night part 2.’ Tarie Carlyon Tel: 01495 616164 – Web: u3asites.org.uk/ebbw-vale email: committee.evu3a@gmail.com | |
