Janet has been a member of the Devon Family History Society for 30 years and can provide help and advice for members of the group. The aim of the group is to share our research experience and help each other. It doesn’t matter where your family roots are, north, east, west or south of the country or elsewhere in the world, hopefully we can help to find your elusive ancestor. You never know, you may find you are related to someone in the group!

Family History is finding out about your family members, where they lived, what they did, black sheep, white sheep or maybe just a bit of a grey sheep, we can help you find them. The Group’s Aim is to find more ways to enhance your family history research and to help each other with their research.

Our December Family History meetings were attended by less than half the group members due to the busy time leading up to Christmas. For those who came along they had the dubious pleasure of me trying to guide them through the complexities of trying to explain how to use their DNA results and matches.

To get some benefit from your DNA results, you do need to have created/uploaded your family tree to Ancestry and link your results to that tree. The more siblings and their descendants you add to your tree, the more DNA matches you will have.

We had the same topic for the afternoon group and while showing how ‘ThruLines’ can help to show where your matches fit into your own family, one member, Jenny, suddenly pointed to the screen and said `I have that person in my matches’. Well to say we were stunned is probably an understatement. Needless to say, I am likely to be investigating this further over the Christmas holiday period.

From the new year I will start to give my members the opportunity to have a one to one with me, to help them move forward with their research either with using available online records or with using their DNA results. I shall look forward to that.

Both of my groups are full at present, but if any u3a member would like some help or advice about researching their family. As I have limited space in my dining room I am unable to accept more members. However, if anyone would like some help or advice then please email me with your query.
