Short Mat Bowls Upavon
The group was started after a successful summer of playing bowls outside with Pewsey Club, this has continued for a few years now.
The initial idea was put forward by other players who were keen to continue meeting during the winter months.
Short Mat Bowls was started a number of years ago and has grown in to a national pastime with clubs throughout the nation. The national governing body in England was founded in 1984.
The appeal of the game is that it provides for friendly gentle competition for all ages, is not too physical yet gives a little exercise in a relaxed way.
All that is required of players is a pair of flat soled shoes (stockinged feet perfectly acceptable).
There are a number of woods(bowls) available at the hall so no other equipment is needed.
We meet most Fridays in Upavon village hall between 2pm and 4pm. It is anticipated that we will continue until the spring when outside bowls begins again, but if there is sufficient interest we may continue on a different day.
There is an initial annual cost of £4 for affiliation, then a weekly charge of £2.50 + 30 pence for tea, coffee and biscuits. For those who are unsure but want to try the game the first session is free. Also, non playing visitors are always welcome.
The maximum practical number of players is 16, and we have a small number of places available.
