Monthly Meetings

Our Monthly Meetings take place in the Parish Hall, Links Lane at 2pm on the 3rd Monday of each month, except August and December. There is a different Talk each month on an amazing range of subjects, with a chance to meet and chat afterwards over tea and biscuits.

Visitors are welcome for a £3 entrance fee. Anyone can come along, find out more and join us!

Outings

Rowlands Castle u3a have visited many great places, including Hampton Court, Kew Gardens, Highclere, the Mary Rose and Leeds Castle.

The Outings are a great opportunity for members to enjoy general social interaction and create new friendships.

There are also Outings organised by different Groups. The Wine Tasting Group recently visited the Ashling Vineyard and tasted some excellent, locally produced wines.

Mon May 20th AGM and How I became the Author of Over 100 Books in Later Life
Wendy Soliman writes historical and paranormal romance and Victorian crime under her own name. She also writes contemporary crime as Evie Hunter and cosy crime as E.V. Hunter. She will talk about the changes she’s seen in the publishing world since the e-book revolution knocked the big five publishers from their perch and explain the challenges and pitfalls faced by the modern day author.

by Tom Cherrett who is Professor of Logistics & Transport Management/Head of Department – Civil, Maritime and Environmental Engineering at the University of Southampton. His research at the University of Southampton includes the examination of the energy reduction potential of using UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) operating alongside traditional and sustainable last mile delivery solutions and examines how UAV operations will function in shared airspace alongside manned aircraft under various regulations.

Mon Sep 16th DNA Fingerprinting
by Dr Ian Goodall, he describes the invention of DNA fingerprinting by English professor Alec Jeffery's in 1984. It explains how the technique was first used to trap a double murderer and rapist in a small English village. The way in which DNA fingerprinting works is explained, together with the associated PCR process. Several of the high profile cases involving DNA fingerprinting are described, including the OJ Simpson case and the deaths of the Russian Royal family in 1917.

Mon Oct 21st Behind the Scenes on Centre Court
Alan Chalmers tells Anecdotes about the many Fascinating Players and Celebrities he has met.
For 40 years from 1976 – 2015, Alan Chalmers was the steward responsible for the seating arrangements and security of the 100s of writing journalists and the competitors and their guests who sought seats on Centre Court to watch matches. In the 40 years of his service Alan was present for over 2000 matches. His principal responsibility was to ensure there were sufficient seats for those entitles to use them and to keep out those who were not entitled.

Jby eff Evans – Freelance journalist and television historian Jeff Evans, author of Rock and Pop on British TV tells the fascinating story of 60 years of music on tv in this fully illustrated talk, beginning in the 1950s with shows such Six-Five Special and Oh Boy! And continuing through the decades with programmes including Juke Box Jury Thank your Lucky Stars as well as a number of programmes that you may have just forgotten.
