Jazz Appreciation Group 2
|Group leader||Graham Fenegan|
|Date||Last Wednesday of the Month|
At the regular meetings subjects are chosen in advance and using available recorded jazz music sessions are then complied to match. Recent meetings have included – ‘Selections from Jazz at the Philharmonic’ and a celebration of the 100th anniversaries of Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk with the second group. There is now to be an occasional series of the ‘Z to A’ of jazz.
Live jazz is also followed and members of both jazz appreciation groups are attendees at, amongst other venues, Chelmsford Jazz Club and the Queens Theatre Hornchurch. In the latter case both at the regular Sunday lunchtime sessions and at the special afternoon and evening concerts held variously on both the foyer and main stages. Also locally there are Fairkytes ‘Live’ sessions often include jazz. Trumpeter Martin Shaw and singer Stacey Kent are past visitors; recently Jacqui Dankworth and later this year (2018) The Ronnie Scott Allstars and a return visit by Georgie Fame.
Members from both groups have also attended the two concerts this year (2017) arranged by the Basildon and Billericay U3A. These have taken place on Friday afternoons in Billericay. The recent one held on 17th November 2017 was the fifth overall and each time the attendance increases; for this concert they sold 150 tickets and hall was packed - who says jazz is dead?
The band at this concert consisted of award winning Enrico Tomaso on trumpet, Julian Marc Stringle on clarinet and tenor sax and local ‘Havering boy’ Nick Dawson on piano. Nick’s regular ‘day job’ is as musical director of the show Mama Mia. To complete the line up the rhythm section was Paul Morgan on bass and Rod Brown on drums. We were treated not only to instrumentals but by vocal choruses from Rico, Nick and this time even Marc. Five superb musicians who gave us numbers from Fats Waller, Louis Armstrong, Al Jolson and Bunny Berigan amongst others. All agreed it was a good way to spend an afternoon and are looking forward to the next.
