Social History
Interest Group leader: Joanie Preston
Meeting information: We meet on the 2nd Friday of each month at 2pm to 4pm.
Meeting venue: Ickenham.
We are a group of like minded people who are interested and enthusiastic to learn more about Social History, which has been described as looking at the lived experience of the past.
At each meeting we decide between us what our next subject will be. We then do individual research in our own time and present our findings at the next meeting for group discussion.
Because we're looking at the lives of ordinary people members often find that the subjects are very relevant to their own family's past and sometimes have memorabilia to share.
Topics we have covered recently include:
- Protests and riots in Great Britain
- The development of Heathrow Airport
- The history of the rose
- Disappearing villages
- 19th century migration to the USA
- Libraries and the mass reading public
