Mid-Northumberland

Cinema and Television Drama Group

Frequency:4th or 5th Friday
Time:11.30 am
Venue:Usually Brian's home
Leader:Brian Hannaford

The Cinema and Television Drama Group gathers once a month, usually on the fourth or fifth Friday of the month, and all of the meetings so far have taken place at the Hannaford residence on Lancaster Park.

Unusually for the groups in Mid-Northumberland U3A, our meetings begin at 11.30 a.m., and we spend about an hour and a half discussing recent releases that some of us have seen at the cinema, as well as current programmes of a dramatic interest on television, before having lunch together. This will indicate what a friendly and sociable group we are.

In addition, I usually make a short presentation about a particular topic, which I illustrate with a brief DVD extract. Over the past year, for instance, some of our diverse topics have been actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julie Christie, Eddie Redmayne, Omar Sharif, Carey Mulligan and Michael Fassbender, films as various as Atlantic City, The Battleship Potemkin, The Sound of Music, Cinema Paradiso and West Side Story, and the director Bill Forsyth.

Occasionally we have a theme such as versatile actors or our favourites in a particular genre, and there are sometimes brief, unthreatening quizzes or particular moans that we have.
