Local History
There was a good attendance at the meeting 12 members and two visitors, it was good to see so many people.
Our topic was the history of Harlow Wood Orthopaedic Hospital, a hospital that was the pride and joy of the Duchess of Portland.
Pauline showed a large selection of photographs from the opening in 1929 to the closure in March 1995.
After the tea break there was the opportunity to look at many more printed photographs, booklets and pamphlets
relating to the hospital.
Prior to the meeting one of our U3A members had sent Pauline photos of her husband when he was in the hospital as a young boy.
They show him in bed pushed outside in the fresh air as was the policy in those days.
Additionally she still had a Visitors Card dated 1946.
Out topic in November will be Clipstone WW1 Army Camp.
