WALKING/RAMBLING GROUP

Date: Sunday, 22 May 2022, 10.30 am
Meeting Place: Lower Machen Village, in front of St Michael’s Church
(nearest post code NP10 8GU)
Lunch: Bring packed lunch
Difficulty: Medium (some gradual climbing from Iron Bridge to
Castle/Tower)

The walk itself is circular, roughly 5 miles in all and of 3 hours’ duration. We will meet at St Michael’s Church, Lower Machen (room for parking in the village) and commence our walk by carefully crossing the main road and following the public footpath towards the Iron Bridge. We will cross the bridge and continue along the footpath until we reach the Coed Craig Ruperra Estate, a beautiful woodland walk leading to Ruperra Castle. From there we will proceed to the Norman Tower viewing point where we will take a break for lunch and, provided it is a clear day, enjoy a view of the Severn Bridge, Newport Transporter Bridge, Flatholme, Steepholme, Cardiff Stadium and the coastline from Penarth to Weston-Super-Mare.

On leaving the Norman Tower, again through woodland, we will head for the village of Draethen and pick up the Rhymney River Walk back to the footpath leading to Lower Machen. Here, at the end of our walk we will visit the beautiful, Grade II listed Church of St Michael’s where, we are told, refreshments will be available.

If you would like to join us or require further details, please contact Terry. If you are without transport I will do my best to arrange a lift for you.
