Moor`s Edge

NEWS

March 2024

Are you retired or semi-retired and wondering what to do? Don’t sit home feeling lonely come to visit us! Moor’s Edge u3a meets at 2.30pm on the second Friday of each month; apart from August our summer break; at the Woolwell Centre, PL6 7TR. You can come twice as a visitor before deciding if you would like to join us. Once you are a member there are now 27 interest groups you could join with hopefully something for everyone.

At our March meeting Stephanie Austin told us about ‘Turning to Crime in retirement’. No it wasn’t an invitation for us all to go and offend; Stephanie has been writing Cozy Crime novels in her retirement. Stephanie’s 8th novel based around Devon and on Dartmoor will be released later this year. Visit her web page for more information at: -https://www.stephanieaustin.co.uk/ .In April we will have a talk about ‘Staying safe from terrorism’ from Sorrel Layne.

This month one of the Short Walks groups had a guided walk around Plympton St Maurice and learnt a lot of interesting facts about its history, many going to Harewood House for a cuppa and a light bite and chat. Next month the group will visit Devonport Park.

The recently formed Art Appreciation group visited the Box and saw the ‘Beyond the Page: South Asian Miniature Painting and Britain exhibition and saw a video about John Akomfrah. The groups’ next trip will be to the Lewinsky Gallery. Another of our newer groups is Map Reading and Navigation and despite the March mist and rain the group walked from Long Ash to Berra Tor having studied the map at their previous meeting.

Music Events members enjoyed a nostalgic evening with the Pretend Beatles at the Woolwell Centre singing along and dancing to the 60’s music. In April they are looking forward to seeing an Abba tribute group.

Our Quiz group have booked their places at the Yelverton Golf club in April for a Quiz and Curry evening. Whether they win or are runner’s up they will no doubt enjoy the food! Both of the Weekenders groups have been out for meals one on Mother’s day to the Boringdon Golf Club and the other to The Rock at Yelverton. These groups are very popular as many members live alone so enjoy the social aspect of sharing a meal with others, plus no vegetables to peel or dishes to wash!

We have more groups than mentioned above including; Singing for Fun, Garden Visits, Coffee cake and chat and book club and several different games groups.

Do have a look at our web events page to see what is planned, https://u3asites.org.uk/moorsedge/events , and the groups page to see the full range of groups we run. On our Facebook page you can find more information and photos about what we have been doing.

We look forward to welcoming those interested in joining us at our monthly meetings and have greeters there to meet you.
