Creative Writing - Scribes

Please see Links, to the right, for news of our latest publication 'Beyond the Village Pump.'

This Group seems to be our first casualty of Covid! Although managing, very successfully, to continue through the pandemic using Zoom, there are not now enough members to manage the costs of a meeting room. A small cohort is hoping to meet in members' homes but this does restrict the number who can attend.

However, being the U3A, we like to welcome all new members and would encourage anyone who has any degree of interest in writing to consider joining the Scribes, meeting like-minded people and helping us to grow the group again. Maxine (07774690433) would love to answer any questions and register your interest in joining her group.

The group has been meeting on Wednesdays at 13:30 every two weeks when they were encouraged to write a variety of short pieces, between 500 to 1500 words (1 to 3 sides of A4 paper.) We think about characterisation; dialogue; sense of place and time; trying to remember to use the 5 senses so that we 'show, not tell'.
We are also trying shared or collaborative writing - we're currently having a go at compiling a radio play - and impromptu 5 minute pieces of writing; these can produce some thoughtful, surprising and often hilarious results. We will be making local visits and writing there for a different kind of focus. Some of us are writing pieces for submission to national publications and at least two of us are starting to write a book.

During the last five years we have self-published three books of our work. An anthology of verse and prose, a series of stories based on Sedgefield legends and themes and, most recently, some murder mystery short stories. We are/have been a busy group!

Our ethos is to help, support and inspire each other. The meetings are informative, relaxed and fun. Even if you have not yet put pen to paper, do come along and join us. Bring your ideas and thoughts and you'll be surprised and delighted at how satisfying it can be to see them transformed into a written piece of work.
