Silent Films
NEW GROUP STARTING SUMMER 2023
The silent era of cinema flourished from around 1900 until it was abruptly terminated by the arrival of films with sound (“talkies”) around 1930. In this short period cinematic technique evolved rapidly and led to the production of a fascinating body of work which is rarely seen today.
This small U3A group aims to meet on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evening of each month in order to view a silent film and then reflect on it perhaps over a glass of wine.
Films from various genres may be explored including the romantic dramas of Valentino and Garbo, the comedies of Keaton and Chaplin, the epics of Griffith and De Mille, the swashbuckling exploits of Douglas Fairbanks, films from the Russian school and the rich Expressionist German films of Wiene, Leni, Murnau, Lang and Pabst.
Some modern silent films may also be included.
