Annual Report 2023
Geology - Richard
The past year has been a very good one for the Geology Group with membership rising to capacity and a full programme of talks and field trips with contributions from many of the groups members. The year started with a talk on diamonds from source to grading as gem stones with further talks on;
iron in the Weald, fossils, the Cheshire Salt Field and Geology’s influence on landscape, soil and plants. Field trips included; building stones and geology of Chatham Dockyard, geological walks around Bearsted and Samphire Hoe, Dover.
Group Project - RIGS Visit Reports
The GeoConservation Kent group is an association of people who care about geological sites and wish to identify, conserve, enhance and research those of particular importance in Kent. Some years ago they listed the Regionally Important Geological Sites in Kent (click Geoconservation Kent in the Links panel at the side of this page). They now need to check them all again to identify their current status but are short of boots on the ground, especially in West Kent, The science has already been done but they need to know if they are still visible / accessible etc. Our U3A Geology Groups already visit some of the sites regularly. As this is an eminently worthy project I have suggested that our U3A group may be able to help updating the records if we are given a simple form to fill in when we visit a site and indeed given a list we can extend our visits to include others that have not been looked at previously. The form to be filled in can be obtained by clicking RIGS Form blank. Similarly RIGS Form Sample shows how the form can be filled in.
