Lichfield

Science and Technology

The group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month, just before 2:00pm in the afternoon, in the Tesco Community Space.

Are you interested in joining the Science and Technology group? All we ask, is that you’re prepared to join in – everyone should take a turn, at some point, to introduce a topic, the discussion afterwards can also be most interesting. It’s amazing what people know.

Phil hosted the Group's Xmas Show & Tell on Monday 11th December 2023.

See the "Hardware Items" picture on the right, for a look at some of the items brought along:

  • A Hydrogen Powered car, demonstrated by David Dundas.
  • A 400volt Aircraft generator for a Radio set from WW11, provided by Robin Taylor.
  • Various clamps and brackets and a set of precision weighing scales used in the manufacture of homemade gun cartridges, provided by Graham Wood
  • A section of sub-marine Fibre Optic cable - that lays on the sea bed, and which I am reliably told by Ian Shardlow is "Trawler impact Proof"
  • Several very strong "Rare Earth" magnets provided by Andy Cheer, which were almost impossible to separate.
  • A beautifully bound copy of "The Temple of Nature" poem by Erasmus Darwin, provided by Chris Lock.

Also there were a few "software" items, that were aired:

  • a presentation by BoB Weitzman on Fermat's Last Theorem, or more correctly his conjecture,
  • a slide rule and a set of logarithm tables, provided by Nigel Groves
  • a presentation by Judy Cheer of a 350 foot depression in the Indian Ocean !
  • and a few videos of fox activity during 2023, from Phil Mapley's back garden.

A great time was had by all, as Tesco provided some complimentary mince pies, to go with the usual Tea and Coffee,
and finally the session was concluded with a trip to the "Oldest Inn" in Lichfield - The Duke of York, when the world was truly "set to rights", by all concerned.
