THE MEMBERS OF THIS GROUP ARE MEETING WEEKLY VIA ZOOM.
Our aim is to have a convivial evening and learn more about wine by comparing and contrasting different grape varieties and blends from a range of countries and regions. We investigate sources, producers and production methods, and consider aromas, flavours, food matches and value for money. Members take it in turns to buy and present wines to the group. We meet every 4th Thursday of the month at 8:00 p.m. in members’ homes on an agreed rota basis. The host chooses the wines and provides bread/crackers/cheese.
Members pay £5 per meeting and each provides 6 (tasting) glasses and something suitable in which to carry them. Also required is something with which to write. As there are currently 10 members, there are plans to set up a second group so, if you are interested, please contact Judy Smith, our Group Co-ordinator. She and I are available to help you set up.
The format usually involves tasting three whites and three reds on any theme of the host’s/hosts’ choosing, but this approach is flexible and can be modified by mutual consent.
I am no expert, but have run a similar group for over 15 years. There will be no ‘blind’ tasting, putting members on the spot. Most of us drink wine at some time or other, usually with food. The more we know about it, the easier it is to choose something appropriate to drink on its own or with a meal.
