German Conversation (advanced)
Name: German Conversation (advanced)
Date and Time: Sessions are held monthly, on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, throughout the year, from 14:30 to 16:00 with a short break in the Summer.
What is the situation for 2021-22?
Uncertainty remains the problem. While everyone wants to see the end to the current restrictions - and many have been lifted - the reality is that the pandemic is still very much present, with cases and hospitalisations once more on the increase.
Many day-to-day activities can still take place against this background, but our traditional round-the-table conversation sessions, generally conducted in enclosed spaces and without an appropriate level of ventilation, cannot safely be restored at this stage.
Where reduced group size gives more flexibility, it may be possible to hold an occasional ‘normal’ meeting outside, if weather permits.
Venue: See above for current situation
The location of each session is agreed at the end of the previous meeting, in accordance with offers of hospitality received, and confirmation is sent by email to all members.
Description of Group:
The immediate future appears to remain Zoom, and this, regrettably, means we shall not be offering the normal level of service to our members.
We explore and discuss a range of topics, largely reflecting the interests of the group members, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It is an opportunity to maintain and extend German conversational skills rather than a formal teaching session. Recent news photos, mostly relating to German-speaking countries, are frequently used to promote discussion and to help extend vocabulary.
Level of Knowledge or Skills Required: Our group is intended for those who have some prior knowledge of German, acquired perhaps at school or from residence or travel in German-speaking countries, so a certain degree of fluency in the language is required. Our sessions are not suitable for complete beginners.
What does it cost? There is no charge beyond the annual subscription to Uckfield U3A.
How do I join? Please contact the Vice Chairperson - Beryl Venables for further information, and to ascertain if there are any vacancies (we limit group size to 6, excluding leaders, to take account of the varying accommodation available).
If no vacancy is available we will happily put you on a waiting list.
