Cycling Group 1

Our friendly cycle group meets every Friday. The group has grown in recent years and is very active. We welcome new members when we can and are always willing to offer support to any enthusiastic cyclist wishing to set up an additional group.
>> We hope all members of our group are able to contribute to our Calendar and assist in the leading of rides. The pressure for places in the group means it is only possible to hold places on our mailing list for regular cyclists.
>> We are not an e-bike group but recognise that with the ravages of time some of our established members may need to go down this route to maintain group cycling.
>> Our weekly rides vary from around 25 miles to more challenging rides in terms of distance and terrain and always include the important refreshment stop. We now limit group size to 12 and each week there are usually 2 groups, sometimes 3, out on the roads and tracks.
>> Leaders of rides circulate details of routes in advance in our weekly Calendar and the programme is planned well ahead. While many rides start at Mawdesley Village Hall we frequently go further afield and enjoy longer trips as part of our programme.
Forest of Dean trip June 2023
Our group has recently enjoyed the annual week’s tour, this time to the Forest of Dean and Wye and Severn valleys.
The Forest is deceptively hilly with some interesting off road tracks and, to add culture, a sculpture trail, including the beautiful ‘Cathedral’ stained glass window.
Our decent from here to the Wye valley was a relief and a joy with the added bonus of coffee at Symonds Yat before heading along the Peregrine Path, an old railway line, to Monmouth. A bit of road to Tintern Abbey before another ex-railway line taking us almost to Chepstow.
The two kilometre tunnel was surprisingly challenging with only low level lights to avoid disturbing the bats. Our return was across the Severn road bridge then up to Gloucester on quiet roads and canal tow paths, the latter giving us a traffic-free entry right to the centre of Gloucester.
The tour was completed with a circle to west and back to the Forest. Five days, 130 miles and plenty of ascent every day!
