Wine Appreciation
This group (affectionately known as the WAGS!) was set up in 2016 to appeal to anyone with an interest in sampling and learning a little more about wine and who wished perhaps to get the best out of the wines they were presently drinking. It's a very informal group, whose intention is to help each other to better appreciate the wines we already like; and hopefully to experience a wider range of wines than members had previously sampled. It was never intended to make anyone a 'Master of Wine'; so our tastings and talks are informal, relaxed and designed to encourage cheerful discussion- and principally, enjoyment. After each session, we want participants to feel they have had an interesting and enjoyable social evening but have also come away knowing a little more than they did about what they've been sampling. That may, for example, be one particular grape variety from a range of different countries; a selection of wines from one particular country or region; or whatever the group feels will contribute to the enjoyment and learning experience.
Most of the monthly tastings are hosted by group members in turn; but this is not an obligation when joining the WAGs. In the past two years we have extended events to include presentations from local wine experts, a visit to a local vineyard, an excellent summer BBQ and a Festive dinner in a well renowned local restaurant with an interesting and well received selection of wines accompanying a lovely meal. The nature of the sessions does mean that the group is limited in size; but if there is sufficient interest and demand, it might be that a further group could be set up.
