Book Group
Group leader: Sylvia Edwards
This group is currently at its maximum capacity but we are drawing up a waiting list and expecting to be able to start a further group around September time. Please make contact through the link to register your interest.
The Book Group offers members the opportunity to read a different book each month and to engage in lively discussion about its merits and the themes it raises. We usually read novels - though no genre is off-limits - and each month’s title is chosen by the members in turn. Members either buy a copy of the book or reserve one from the library. We aim to choose books well in advance to allow time for the library option.
The session usually begins with an explanation as to why the book in question was chosen and then becomes a free discussion of members’ reactions. We do not always share the same opinion about our chosen book but all agree both that the best discussions take place when there are opposing views and that we appreciate being encouraged to read books that we might not otherwise have read.
We have read books from many genres. Recent choices have been ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ by Liane Moriarty; ‘Piranesi’ by Susanna Clarke; ‘The Dictionary of Lost Words’ by Pip Williams and ‘The Salt Path’ by Raynor Winn.
The meeting takes place in the leader’s home, and a drink - and biscuit - are offered half way through the session, for which there is a charge of 50p per session.
The size of the venue - and the nature of the discussion - limits the group size to 10.
