Wine Appreciation 1 & 2

Wine Appreciation Groups (WAGS)

We have two wine appreciation Groups. Each Group meets at the houses of each member in turn; membership is limited to about ten so that they can fit around a dining table. The cost of a tasting is covered by the host member so that no money changes hands. Both existing Groups have about ten members so we are keen to meet a demand to set up another Group. If you would like to join this third Group, and especially if you are prepared to be an organiser, please contact Alan Townshend (Tel:651 212) or Pat Dale (Tel:654 976) who will be happy to talk to you.

Our November meeting was a tasting of East European wines, selected and hosted by Sheila Lines, which demonstrated the improving quality, increasing availability and good value of wines from Hungary, Moldova and Bulgaria. “Radacini”, a sauvignon blanc from Moldova (Waitrose, £5.99) was the best of the three whites tasted. The Bulgarian “Silver Mine” merlot (Co-op, £6.00) was the best red, marginally better than the equivalent cabernet sauvignon “Silver Rock” (£4.75!).

Please contact Alan Townshend (Tel. 651212) for further details.

WAG2

At our November Meeting our host for the night visited Waitrose to prove you can buy some good wines at discounted prices and good prices.
He succeeded with 4 wines but 1 from the Ian Botham Wines (a Cabernet Sauvingon ) was not a bit like it's name sake,( it was rather thin ) and another by popular agreement would be better served with chips.
Still, 4 out of 6 wasn't a bad thing. Our evening ended with a light hearted discussion on China and which wines we would serve with some of their delicacies such as barbequed sparrows and grass hoppers.
We met for our Christmas get together in December when we were joined by 3 guests from our other Wine Group. The evening started with home-made Martinis to get us warmed up then went on to the wines and fun.
Our hostess Anita had provided a Christmassy spread with crackers and games, each member brought a bottle of their favourite wine so the evening went with a swing and all enjoyed themselves.

For further information, please contact Pat Dale (tel: 654 976)
