History

Recently, at our regular Southdown Methodist meeting venue, we have debated whether the USA was right to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We have also investigated measures introduced by Gladstone’s first government (1868 – 74); and we have looked at archaeological discoveries providing clues about who built the ancient Mexican city of Teotihuacan (and what led to its destruction). We have also studied: early railway developments in Britain and their effect on social reform; the Vietnam war; First World War poets; and controversies surrounding women’s suffrage: should they have been given the vote. The first Autumn date is a talk on Karl Marx on Sept. 18. Other dates are Oct. 16, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4.
