East Grinstead

History Themes

History Themes group
A dynamic approach to history study. Instead of plodding through year by year or decade by decade we see how things evolve and how they fit into what is going on.

Members take turns to choose a theme and make a presentation. Others may also do a bit of homework. Discussion and contributions by members follow.

We have had a personal account of transportation under the USSR and a description of a riot in East Grinstead. We have asked why do we study history at all.

Recent subjects have included: Piers; Perfume; Women in medicine; Samuel Smiles, Mrs Beeton and mid-1800s etiquette; Simon de Montfort and the beginning of Parliament; Liberty's through the decades; Nottingam in WW II; What led up to E. Grinstead Library; Causes of historical change (a discussion); Britons, Saxons & place names; The Middle class 1900-1950; Daniel Defoe; Coinage; Follow up - what could this money buy? Dentistry; Rural poverty in Sussex; Secret societies; John Wilkes; 1900 - the end of certainty; Early history of news and newspapers; Palace of Westminster, Parliament; Women travellers.

To come: Royal Pavilion; Slavery & the City of London; Marriage; John Wesley & the Evangelical Revival
