Film Club
IMPORTANT CHANGE From January 2022 onwards the Film Club will meet in the afternoon instead of the morning, at 2.00pm
This is a group for anyone interested in watching and talking about films. It is led by Arthur and linked to his Cinema Visits group. Every month a DVD is shown in the home of one of the members and the film is then discussed. These home screenings are suggested by the members. Confirmed upcoming showings will always be listed in the newsletter and in the calendar below as well.
Further details about each film and how to book a place will normally appear in the Events Calendar each month. Venues (private homes in Waltham Forest) are arranged nearer the time. Please note that home screenings are for Waltham Forest u3a members only.
Venues can vary, so contact Arthur to discover who is hosting a particular film. IMPORTANT Please let him know in advance (by phone, text or email and only on or after the date stipulated) if you would like to come to a home screening. Don't just turn up. This helps the host and there have been times when we've had to turn people away because we're oversubscribed. For this reason it is also really helpful if you can let him know if you later can't come and your place can be offered to someone else. Although if you are a member and you fail to secure a place at a showing, it may well be possible to borrow the DVD afterwards, for personal use at home. Talk to Arthur about this.
The local WEA Film Club is not part of our U3A but many members enjoy attending their films, shown monthly at the South Woodford Odeon. Cost is 20p each time, on the door. Further details of the programme are sent to U3A Film Club members by email and may appear on our web pages too.
We also aim to visit a cinema once a month Cinema Visits. We try to see films that will provoke thoughts and continue a discussion afterwards. Over the past year we have visited cinemas in Stratford, Greenwich, Hackney and the West End as well as the BFI. At the moment we pick the film first and the exact details of day and place have to be finalised at the last minute. This may change if members vote to do so.
