History of Medicine

This group will be a wide-ranging interest group involving ‘away days’ to London museums of health and medicine (choice of up to 25), studying the profiles of renowned discoverers and inventors of analytical and surgical techniques and devices (up to 25 identified so far), plus general, broad-ranging subjects (up to 8 identified so far)

It is proposed to devote the first meeting to deciding the programme and subjects to be followed at monthly meetings throughout 2015, so as to get members’ consensus of the subjects of most interest to the majority of members.

Subject to agreement of members at that first meeting, it is proposed that the first subject could be of a general nature and entitled ‘Aboriginal Healing Practices and the Impact of European Settlement’ on those practices.

The second subject could be ‘Open Heart Surgery’ to give an overview of the development of different types of heart treatments, how they have benefitted patients, together with the profiles of pioneer surgeons as early as 1896 to the present day.
These two subjects would be presented by the Group Leader, Mark Davis, a retired, registered drug pedlar … a pharmacist!!

If you are interested in joining this group please let Mark know, preferably in writing, if you intend to take part and come to the first meeting at Mark’s home at 63 High Street, Silsoe, Bedfordshire MK45 4ES, Telephone No: 01525 862489, E-mail: davism960@aol.com .
