Ponteland U3a is part of the UK-wide Third Age Trust organisation generally known as the ‘University of the Third Age’

  • We are not a university and have no curriculum, no exams and have no teaching staff:
  • You might see us as part of the ‘University of Life’.
  • We aim to foster friendship and self-learning through sharing activities, knowledge and experience. You don’t have to be an expert in anything to take part.
  • The Third Age of life is often seen as retirement but we have no age limit and welcome those in retirement, semi-retirement or just not in full-time paid employment.

Ponteland U3A was formed in 1994 and currently has over 340 members and over 30 activity groups. Membership costs £10 from January for the calendar year (£5 for Associate membership who are a full member of another U3A). Ponteland is an historic village at the southern edge of Northumberland County, situated some ten miles north-west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. We do not have a catchment area and much of our membership comes from beyond Ponteland.

Our U3A is a member both of the Northumbria Region of U3As and the UK-wide Third Age Trust which is part of a wider international movement. As well as our own self-organised activities, there are activities organised by both of these wider organisations, and some idea of these can be seen by checking out the ‘Region’ and U3A’ options in the Menu bar at the top of this page.

We hold a monthly meeting, usually with a guest speaker and usually on the first Wednesday of each month, starting at 2:00pm in St Mary’s Parish Hall on Thornhill Road, opposite ‘The Blackbird’. Attendance is not compulsory but it is a good way to meet us and you are very welcome to come along. Details of the monthly meetings are on our ‘Events’ page.

If you can’t attend one of these meetings contact us here and let us know what your interests are.

Please explore our website, It is designed to provide helpful and hopefully interesting information and ideas for current and prospective members. The Group pages provide information and some also show photos of the group in action. All photos are also shown on the Gallery page. Please also at the end check out the Links page which has been developed with you in mind and provides many links to other useful internet sites.
