Archaeology
Date: | First Wednesday of month, and others |

Duration: | Variable |
Venue: | Various |

The aim of this group is simply to study archaeology, particularly with regard to the local area. We usually go out on the first Wednesday of the month, although this is not always the case. The main idea is to go to a site to see how it fits into the surrounding landscape. By walking over it, you can get a feel for why it was built and why in that particular spot. As always, there is plenty of discussion and theories fly around. We also go to nearby museums, especially in the winter months, when the weather can be unreliable.
The Cotswolds and surrounding area are rich in pre-history and we have visited sites ranging from the Neolithic Era, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman Era, through to the early Anglo-Saxon period. As well as major sites, such as Avebury and Stonehenge, we have been to smaller ones, such as the Hoar Stone, a Neolithic Portal Dolmen, found at Enstone in Oxfordshire. They all have a story to tell.
In addition, the group has visited actual dig sites, the most notable being the Sisters Neolithic Long Barrow, which is being excavated by Professor Tim Darvill. Some members have taken part in digs and several helped dig test pits for soil use analysis at the nearby Salmonsbury Camp on Greystones Farm in Bourton-on-the-Water.
